COMMUNITY ORGANIZER: OCCCO is seeking a highly talented and motivated Community Organizer with a commitment to developing grassroots leaders and a passion for social justice. Community Organizers are responsible for providing training to low- and moderate-income congregation and neighborhood leaders to effectively organize to improve conditions in their neighborhoods, schools, and communities. In its 23 year history, OCCCO has provided training to grassroots leaders who have in turn shaped public policy in areas such as affordable housing, education reform, access to affordable, quality health care, and neighborhood safety. OCCCO-trained community leaders are recognized as some of the strongest and most effective grass-roots leaders in Orange County. OCCCO is an affiliate of the PICO National Network.
OCCCO Community Organizers are recognized as some of the most dynamic and effective in Orange County. Professionals who work with OCCCO receive training in the highly effective and proven PICO model of Community Organizing. They receive personal investment and mentoring from the executive director and the PICO National Network. OCCCO community organizers are challenged to grow personally and professionally through the rigors of organizing and will develop highly valuable skills in the areas of training, group dynamics, strategic thinking and shaping public policy.
Primary responsibilities:
· Provide training to congregation and community members in the principles and concepts of congregation-based community organizing
· Conduct one-to-one visits with grassroots community members and influential, external leaders on a consistent and regular basis
· Assist grassroots leadership in defining vision and goals for Local Organizing Committees
· Conduct outreach, research, and strategic planning to move communities to social action
· Coordinate large community action meetings
· Participate in local and national staff development sessions
· Participate in fundraising and administrative activities as required
Requirements:
Candidates should have a baccalaureate degree; this preference may be waived in light of prior, relevant, full-time work experience. Organizer candidates must participate in and successfully complete a one-to-one screening process. Other requirements include the following:
· Spanish-English bilingual (IF YOU DO NOT SPEAK SPANISH, YOU WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION) Vietnamese language also a plus.
· Commitment to social change and justice
· Strong analytical, writing, and public speaking skills
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to teach and challenge people.
· Ability to work with diverse religious, racial, and ethnic communities
· Ability to work as part of a strong staff team
· Ability to work independently; self-starter
Salary:
Full time, $38,000- $40,000 per year
Generous benefits package including medical, dental and retirement.
