Respect the dignity of workers | Housing for all families A house is more than a roof and four walls. It is security. It is respite. It is a small reward at the end of a hard day’s work. It is the space needed for families to thrive. It is a place to love and be loved. Protecting the right of working families to secure affordable housing preserves the dignity of workers and those they provide for. In Orange County, securing affordable housing is difficult for many, not least for low-income families. We live in the third most expensive County in the United States. Based on national data, housing expenses should not exceed 30% of a family’s budget. At this rate, one would need to make $32 an hour to reasonably afford housing in Orange County. Given service sector jobs average between $12-14 an hour, most low-income earners either work two jobs or squeeze several families into one unit to pool money and pay rent. Affordable housing is about preserving families and restoring dignity. Through the determination of our leaders and collaborative partnerships, we have effectively organized for more affordable housing units in Orange County. In the past year, we were at the table negotiating a Community Benefits Agreement in Anaheim surrounding the controversial Platinum Triangle project. Our leaders are also organizing around the extension of the strategic housing plan in Anaheim. We advocate for higher wages or more affordable housing units. We need one or the other, or both.
