Shakeel Syed | Islamic Shura Council of Southern California

Shakeel Syed is the Executive Director of the Islamic Shura Council, a federation of mosques & Muslim organizations. Syed also serves as Vice President of the Board of ACLU-Los Angeles and as a board member of Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice-OC. Syed speaks frequently on various socio political issues & is also cited on issues related to Muslims & Islam by national and international media. Syed has received several awards, such as from the OC Labor Federation; OC Human Relations Commission and Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice among others.  Syed has dual Masters in Sciences and Arts and has been living in Southern California for more than two decades.

Faith in Action : Reverend Karen Stoyanoff

Since moving to Southern California in 1998, Rev. Karen Stoyanoff joined local efforts to alleviate oppression because of race, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, and religious affiliation. She has been an elected board member of the Southern California Affiliate Board for the ACLU and a board member of the Orange County NCCJ [National Conference of Community and Justice]. She is a founding member of Progressive Interfaith Alliance and is completing a term on the Board of the Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry in California. Karen is a newly appointed member of the Orange County Human Relations Council board. Currently a minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church Anaheim, Rev. Stoyanoff is an avid supporter of the work of OCCCO. She helped organize the Clergy Caucus for OCCCO and is proud to stand with them as they create a more just community in Orange County. 




Democracy Builder : Amin David

Founding member of Los Amigos of Orange County
Amin David, born in Chihuahua, Mexico, to a Lebanese dentist/inventor, is a longtime community leader and activist who has championed Latino community causes for many decades. In 1978, he founded the Los Amigos of Orange County, a group that meets every Wednesday morning to discuss issues and concerns in Orange County affecting the Latino community. He also served as chair/president of the Orange County Sponsoring Committee, National Concilio of America; Coalition for Dialogue on Human Rights; Mexican American Opportunity Foundation; Orange County Human Relations Commission; Orange County Community Housing Corp.



Legacy Leadership : Catalina and Nicolas Muñozz

The Muñoz’ have been OCCCO leaders for 30 years.  Their leadership has helped transform their home — the Delhi Community in Santa Ana.  The Muñoz family are dedicated leaders for justice which is founded in their faith and hope.  With their Local Organizing Team at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church - Delhi, Catalina and Nicolas organized 1000’s of meeting with their neighbors and city officials in the last 30 years. The creation and initiation of the The Delhi Community Center (our Gala location) was a key victory for the Delhi organizing team and community effort that took several years and many challenges- however in the end the community is better served.

Justice Innovators : Orange County Community Foundation (received by President: Shelly Hoss)

The Orange County Community Foundation works to make Orange County a more vibrant, healthier and stronger community for all. In partnership with its generous donors and partners, OCCF has awarded more than $330 million to meet needs in Orange County, across the nation and around the world. Shelley Hoss has served as OCCF's president for 15 years. Under her leadership, OCCF has become recognized as the “center of gravity” for philanthropy in Orange County, and an impactful leader in mobilizing resources to meet our community's greatest needs.

                                                                                  'Diana and the Gents'

‘Diana and the Gents’ is a musical group straight out of Sacramento. They are known for their eclectic and rhythmic style. They feature a variety of music styles, from classic rock tunes to pop to traditional Mexican Music, always emulating and infusing the music with their own diverse backgrounds. The group is made up of amazing musicians and vocals; on bass and vocals is Rudy Guzman, Jose Idrovo on percussion, Rafael Guzman on guitar and Diana Campos on vocals, together they form Diana and the Gents. Diana Campos became a dear friend of OCCCO during the 2013 Campaign for Citizenship pilgrimage across California. She walked more than 280 miles with PICO California and along with 5 other OCCCO leaders to bring attention to the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants that deserve dignity and immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship.  

'Donaji' Ballet Folklorico

Ballet Folklorico Donaji originated from the city of Anaheim and was founded in 2000.  The group consists of 25 students from 3-20 years of age. Donaji's primary mission is keep youth and children active and involved in positive and transformative activity through the celebration of their culture and heritage. Donaji Ballet Folklorico not only teaches a variety of dances from all over Mexico but also helps share their rich cultural heritage at party’s, festivals and community events. Donaji is a community based dance group that raises money through various fundraisers they hold which fund buying their own costumes and props; in addition they receive donations from different organizations who support the young talented dancers.  Since 2012, Donaji has helped engage youth from different communities in Anaheim like Anna Dr. to learn different cultural dances, as well to gain valuable characteristics through discipline and perseverance. Currently, Donaji practices on a bi-weekly basis at John Marshall Park in the city of Anaheim from 5 pm-7pm.
