OCCCO leaders from across the organization began meeting in the spring to discuss how this year’s $26 billion state budget gap would impact low-income communities in Orange County. Voting in favor of the proposed tax extensions, OCCCO leaders from San Juan Capistrano, Mission Viejo, Anaheim, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Costa Mesa, and Santa Ana held two press conferences, a diverse faith and fun event and made over 700 phone calls to local constituents, all to call on swing vote State Senator Tom Harman to vote to pass the extensions. To culminate the campaign, OCCCO leaders joined 1,000 leaders from across PICO CA for an action in front of the State Capitol in Sacramento. Parents and community volunteers from CREER and OCCCO participated in a phone banking campaign to educate the public and to ask legislators to continue to fund education for their children. Over 30 parents made 730 phone calls to constituents in State Senator Tom Harman’s district, and invited people to support the tax extensions that would fill the budget gap and protect communities from greater cuts to education and other vital programs This was one of many events being held by PICO California and it's affiliates (such as OCCCO) for the state-wide Campaign for California. See our EVENTS page for more information on upcoming events. . Nearly 100 OCCCO clergy, parents, surfers and concerned community members gathered in front of Sen. Tom Harman's office on Tuesday, May 31 to lift up Orange County kids and ask Senator Harman to stop the cuts and maintain the existing revenues. Testimonies were shared by parents, clergy, a local elementary principal and even a surfer, to talk about the devastating impacts that deeper cuts will have on Orange County and the opportunities that it provides for its kids. Children held signs with colorful hand prints that asked Sen. Harman to 'Be a Champion for OC kids' and cheered as cars honked going past. The message that each speaker brought was to ask Sen Harman to stop the cuts and maintain the revenues, "because our kids are worth the investment." Campaign for California 05/16/2011
