For the past two years, the Poverty Task Force of Anaheim - an entity co-led by OCCCO and CLUE Orange County - has been working hard to address the issue of homelessness in Orange County.

In Ahaheim, over 42,000 residents live under the Federal Poverty Level and 83% of Anaheim students are eligible for free or reduced lunches.  The motel family crisis in Anaheim is well documented.

At a recent rally at Anaheim City Hall, the Poverty Task Force presented a 5-year plan to address homelessness to Councilwoman Lorri Galloway.  She agreed to work with us to pass this plan for services, shelter, and support to Anaheim's homeless.

The Poverty Task Force of Anaheim has been hard at work over the past year in one-to-one and research meetings focused on addressing the rapidly growing issue of homelessness in Anaheim.  Many do not know that during a recent fifteen-year period, from 1990 to 2005, Orange County’s homeless population grew 600% - from 5,000 to 35,000 persons.  To put this number in perspective, over that same period Orange County’s general population grew at only 26.8%.

Members of the Poverty Task Force, using the recently released the “10-year Plan to End Homelessness” as a foundation, are drafting a 5-year Plan for Ending Homelessness as a proposal for the City of Anaheim.  They hope this plan will serve as a model for other cities in Orange County.  For more information, contact Kerry Gallagher at 714-612-5028.

After eight years of hard work and a huge victory for affordable housing, St. Boniface Catholic Church in Anaheim is focusing its attention on the serious budget cuts affecting Anaheim City Schools.  With no nurses, no librarians, no vice principals, no psychologists, and few custodians, the future of Anaheim’s kids is imperiled.  At a January 2010 forum focused on cuts to Anaheim’s school districts, Eduardo and Patricia Leon shared a testimony about their daughter with asthma - whose very life is at risk with no nurses around to give quick treatment to their daughter.  The St. Boniface Local Organizing Ministry will meet with district leaders, principals, members of the State Assembly and others to explore ways to protect children’s education, safety, future.
